Understanding the risk of incidental findings: A qualitative study of people with cognitive symptoms

Incidental imaging findings are abnormalities of potential clinical significance discovered unintentionally that are not related to the symptoms that prompted the test [1]. Their identification frequently leads to adverse psychological and social consequences [2,3]. Knowledge of the concept of incidental findings prior to imaging may enhance patient autonomy and reduce anxiety in the event that an incidental finding is subsequently identified [4]. However, the risk of incidental findings is frequently not discussed in clinical practice.
