ASET Highlights Neurodiagnostic Week With COVID-19 Webinar

Every year during Neurodiagnostic Week, a well-deserved light shines on the contributions and quality patient care provided every day be neurodiagnostic technologists. This year, the celebration falls the week of April 19-25 – during one of the worst public health crises in modern times, the COVID-19 pandemic.

But that is not stopping ASET- the Neurodiagnostic Society, which sponsors this celebration every year. That’s because they know their members and neurodiagnostic technologists (NDTs) need their support more than ever.

To that end, the organization has published a variety of resources to help NDTs navigate their jobs and provide safe and effective patient care. These include a COVID-19 position statement, newsletter, and resource sheet, offering best practices for donning and doffing personal protective equipment (PPE), and performing EEGs on patients with respiratory isolation precautions.

According to Executive Director Kevin Helm, starting during Neurodiagnostic week ASET will offer a free recorded webinar on COVID-19 and neurodiagnostic testing as part of an ongoing effort to address issues that are most important to that community.

The free webinar recording will be published on their website, aset.org, on Thursday April 23rd and will include presenters from Yale New Haven Hospital:

  • Rebecca Khozein, Executive MBA, MS, R EEG/EP T., R. NCS. T, CSSGB clinical program director, Neurophysiology and ABRET president
  • Lawrence Hirsch, Chief, Division of Epilepsy and EEG, co-director of the Yale Medicine Epilepsy & Seizure Center and ACNS council member

But Neurodiagnostic Week is not just about COVID-19. It’s also an opportunity to show appreciation for the valuable contributions to patient care that NDTs provide, to educate others, and help grow the profession. One way you can do that is by sharing this fun video that explains what NDTs do and encourages young people to enter the field.

You can also order a Neurodiagnostic Week poster from ASET’s online store and display at the office. Use hashtag #NDWeek on social media to help raise awareness and promote the important work done by an NDT you know.

ASET is also sharing some fun examples of ways people have celebrated Neurodiagnostic Week in years past. Considering the important social distancing rules we need to follow today, we like this idea from EEG tech Lary Breeding and his team at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston: They used the Neurodiagnostic Week poster as wallpaper on about 1,000 of their computers. It was seen by 8,000 to 10,000 people throughout this week at three hospitals, four minor emergency centers, and a few other entities around Houston.

Learn more about Neurodiagnostic Week on the ASET website, and don’t forget to check out the COVID webinar this week.

Special thanks to Kevin Helm, MBA CAE, executive director of ASET and Connie Kubiak, R. EEG/EP T., CNIM, CLTM, FASET, traveling technologist and outgoing ASET president.
